The HR Customer Services and Solutions group is currently accepting applications to fill up to 7 temporary positions at Bryce Canyon National Park. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire and/or extension (when initial appointment is less than 1039 hours) if workload and funding allow. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2015
WEATHER : Due to high altitudes (7,000-9,000 foot elevations), summers are relatively mild with daytime temperatures rarely surpassing 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Nighttime temperatures are cool (Upper 40 to lower 5O degrees). Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August.
RECREATION: Bryce Canyon offers many recreational opportunities such as hiking, camping, photography, horseback riding, bird-watching, and stargazing. In addition the neighboring Dixie National Forest and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument offer hiking, canyoneering, camping, mountain biking, fishing and four wheei-drive ORV opportunities . Also located nearby are six other National Parks and three state park sites, all within a three hour drive and all providing other unique recreational activities.
SHOPPING/MEDICAL/ENTERTAINMENT : Small grocery stores, restaurants, service stations, places of worship, and K-12 schools are located in Tropic, UT (15 miles). The nearest medical facilities are Panguitch, UT (23 miles). Cedar City (80 miles) offers movie theaters, clothing stores, full service grocery stores, department stores, and home improvement stores.

As a uniformed employee of the National Park Service, the incumbent serves as a front-line representative working at various entrance stations and campground or visitor center. Incumbent must be able to report for work at various locations throughout the park. Incumbent is responsible for providing current, accurate information to visitors concerning the Bryce Canyon area and other surrounding areas of interest. Responsible for collecting appropriate fees at park entrance stations and campground or visitor center following established accountability guidelines for handling government funds. Incumbent operates an electronic cash register and credit card machine, perform opening and closing shift functions, issues entrance receipts, park passes and federal recreation passports.
Complete shift reports using established guidelines. Must have the ability to troubleshoot register malfunctions and make minor repairs. Also assists permanent staff in orientation and on-the-job training of new employees.
Incumbent must be knowledgeable about a variety of resource-oriented topics and continues to keep this knowledge current. Incumbent explains the significance of the area's natural, cultural and historic resources; advises visitors of park regulations and explains importance of such to protection of the area, resources, and safety of visitors. Incumbent serves as a deterrent to infraction of park resource regulation by their presence.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting of moderately heavy items and sedentary work is required. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is often performed in small, outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Park areas may be geographically located in areas of high elevation, rugged terrain or dense populations. High levels of vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods. Duties may be performed alone in isolated locations.

In order to qualify for this position at the GS-05 level, you must possess one of the following:
A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Visitor Use Assistant. Specialized experience includes providing information or assistance to the public in a business or recreation setting; instructing groups of people or individuals; and compiling and analyzing information to report. Experience also included handling, tracking, or depositing monies; using software programs to maintain fee and stock data; resolving issues that arise in the remittance process and assisting staff with fee issues; and using tools or equipment (e.g., cash registers, calculators, etc.) to make sales transactions. -OR- B. Four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. -OR- C. Equivalent combination of experience and education.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. In order to receive credit for experience, your resume must clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment ( month/year ), and the number of hours worked per week.
Credit for experience is given on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.

Participation in the Federal Employees Health Benefit (FEHB) program - Employees on temporary appointments, seasonal schedules who will be working a schedule of less than six months per year, and intermittent employees who are expected to work 130 hours per month or more for at least 90 days will be eligible to enroll in an FEHB plan. Employees electing to participate in the FEHB will be responsible for the employee share of the premium while on the official agency roles, which is deducted from bi-weekly earnings. Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
